What inspired the builders of important archaeoastronomical sites like Chetro Ketl and Machu Picchu and what were the messages the ancients wished to share with their pictographic and petroglyphic stories? Many say that they were trying to better understand nature and the cosmos, their purpose, life and death as well as, through symbolism and iconography, communicate with their ancestors and their descendants of the distant future. My reverence for such important monuments and pictorial messages gifted to me by my ancestors is why I chose the La Cieneguilla Petroglyph site. As a descendant of the architects of the petroglyphs, the place is sacred and meaningful to me as I am Ka'waik and Kat'stia Hano (post-colonial: Laguna & San Felipe Pueblo people), Keres-speaking tribes. While visiting the site, there is a residual influence of genetic memory for me – I feel the messages and life has more meaning and purpose than before. As a paleo- lapidarist, working with stone is an essential and sublime connection to the Earth Mother for me as her spirit and essence is in every stone. Being respectful of my medium and honoring the ancients and their methods of working with stone, I connect to my ancestors' messages-on-stone on a direct and personal level. Like many of the glyphs found at the La Cienegulla site, I also incorporate circles and spirals into my work – each of which universally represent perpetuity, eternity and infinity: time without end. Using these motifs and their representations allows me to pay homage to- and connect with my ancestors who used these symbols and design elements in ceremony and to describe the unknown.
