As a child growing up on Alto Street, I often visited the Louis MontaƱo Park. Bordering the park, murals depicting Chicano/a culture covered the walls. These images spoke to me, and I was easily able to identify or relate to the imagery. It felt like home; it felt familiar; it felt like gente embraced the park.

Murals and street art are constantly in motion. They shift, change, and evolve throughout time. Although some of the murals have evolved, they still reflect Chicano/a culture with the use of rich color, cultural influence, and Indigenous iconography.

Returning to this place filled my heart with melancholy and a sense of loss. It also fed and filled my soul with hope, love, and a sense of continuance.
