CENTRUM
Landscape and Portrait Project
Artist in Residency, IAIA, Santa Fé, NM, 2024
In 2021 I was invited to work in the small town of Barisciano, Italy in the Abruzzo region. In 2016 there was a devastating earthquake in the region. That, combined with the trauma of COVID meant that the population was hungry for cultural interaction. My project was a series of large scale panoramic photographs. Each location was determined by a citizen-participant and each person contributed a written description of the place and why they chose it.
What I loved about this project is it allowed me into locations that I had no introduction to other than a persons’ unique observations about a place. From day to day I did not know where I was going or who I would be interacting with.
The project at IAIA is an extension of this scheme. In this case, I wanted to include the person who brought me to this place, their “center of the world.” Further, I wanted to interact with the cultural community, people who support, create and promote culture in the Santa Fe area. This starts with the IAIA community and branches out to persons who I’ve know as part of the culture since I started coming to Santa Fe in the early 1990’s.
Each photograph is an amalgamation of about fifty to seventy photographs taken on site. This particular technique allows me to create a highly detailed photograph, equivalent to about one thousand megapixels (If you use analog means, equivalent to a large scale contact print from a view camera). Each image is printed on the Epson 9570 printer here at IAIA.
I want to thank all of those who participated in the project. An apology to those I did not get to on this particular journey.
I am grateful to all those at IAIA that made my time here so productive and deeply meaningful.
